Don't buy GE microwaves from Walmart

GE Model WES1450DM1BB defective within 2 months of purchase
If you have bought or thinking about purchasing a new microwave beware of the models Walmart sells. Specifically the GE Model WES1450DM1BB.

What is the problem?

Well, along with the other consumers who purchased this particular model microwave made by GE and sold by WALMART, within 2 months it just up and quit working. For no reason at all the turntable quit turning one day, then the next day it started arching and sparking. Thought the thing was going to catch on fire. There is a picture from the service tech below showing the bad part making microwave arch and spark as well as pictures of the microwave itself. This part happens to be at least a $50.00 part, not including labor to repair. Just for this repair it will cost nearly the $120.00 I paid for this thing new. Doesn't seem worth it does it? As far as the turn table motor, well the microwave service man can't even get the part.

Why is a certified and well qualified microwave repair tech unable to order parts for a brand new microwave?

Well the answer is Walmart muscled GE to use inferior parts and cheap overseas labor to produce microwaves cheaper. Therefore replacement parts are just not made available. So if your microwave model number starts with WES you are probably going to have a hard time finding replacement parts.

Of course this is not entirely Walmart's fault, they do only sell the things, GE is also to blame. GE should tell Walmart, as a company we, (GE) produce quality products and will not produce inferior products just so you (Walmart) can sell them cheaper.

Oh and have fun contacting GE support or returning to Walmart you'll just get the normal run around. Then most likely get frustrated like they want and give up. Then go to another STORE and buy another GE microwave. Your out a bunch of money and GE is selling twice as many microwaves.

DON'T BUY ANY GE APPLIANCE!

My husband and I purchased 3 monogram series appliances, and yes we spent the extra money for what we thought were quality products. WE WERE WRONG. All three appliances have broken and today I learned that our 2 year old double-wall ovens (which have been broken every six months since we purchased them) can't be repaired!

GE "rudely" offered to sell us new ovens at a reduced rate!

Honestly, don't purchase GE products!

Wish I had read all of this earlier! We had the exact problem described above. And, naturally, WalFart won't take it back and GE won't service it. I was told that the one year warranty described in the manual is not valid. This unit has a "Return to Vendor" warranty. Walmart, in turn, won't take it back since it was purchased over 90 days ago-- we've had it for about 5 months. So, basically, we are out a chunk of change. Oh well-- maybe I can use it as a really big paper weight.

I too have had problems with this particular model of microwave. My parents bought if for me in April at a walmart in Rapid City, SD. It has worked just fine up until last night. I baked three potatos on the potato setting. They cooked just fine all the way through. Then I put in some frozen veggies, and they cooked half way through and wouldn't get any warmer. Now it won't heat anything. Everything on the microwave seems to be working. It even sounds like its working, but it won't heat anything now. I had previously bought an Emerson from the same walmart prior to getting this one. It worked for one week before it popped a fuse or something and went black. I wrote to GE last night and told them that as far as I was concerned they had lost a customer, and if I don't get a full refund, Walmart will be next. Its really disgusting isn't it? How much things cost now a days and how little they are really worth! I am greatful for this blog however, because I intend to print it off and bring it with me when I take that peace of crap back to walmart. So they can see for themselves just what kind of junk this microwave really is and that I am not the only one who feels that way.

I wish I had read this blog before I bought my microwave at Wal-mart. I got the JES1358WL model just last week and tonight it just cut off and will not turn back on at all. I don't understand how in one week it just quit working! Doesn't make sense at all to me, especially when I have checked the plug and the breaker and both are working fine, its just the microwave. It's ridiculous that billion dollar companies take advantage of their customers like this!

I'm another poor slob that bought a GE WES1450DM1BB microwave at Walmart in Philadelphia, PA. I have only had this microvave 3 months when it quit on me, it just stopped heating and wouldn't let me change the power on it. I think GE and Walmart should be fined. It really makes me angry that they aren't doing anything about this. Sorry guys, no longer a customer.

Ahh, I too have bought this horrible product. I had it for almost a year and used it quite a bit and now it no longer heats anything. I am thoroughly pissed because this will be the 2nd microwave that has died in the past year that I have bought from Walmart.

Thanks for the blog...too bad I didn't read it before I bought this POS.

THE REAL SHAME IN ALL OF THIS IS THAT THE ATTORNEY GENERAL OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IS SUPPOSED TO BE GOING AFTER CROOKS, BUT THEY "NEVER" GO AFTER THE "REAL" ONES. OBAMA IS NO BETTER THAN ANY OTHER PRESIDENT WE HAVE EVER HAD. THEY ARE ALL BOUGHT AND PAID FOR FROM THE BEGINNING OR THEY WOULD HAVE "NEVER" BEEN "GIVEN" THE PRESIDENCY. EVERY DAY IS WORSE THAN THE LAST AND EVERY PRESIDENT IS WORSE THAN THE LAST. THEY TELL THEIR LIES AND THE HEATHEN SWOON. IF YOU CAN'T SEE THE "TRUTH" BY NOW, YOU ARE TRULY HOPELESS.

Yes,It happened to me also. I was heating milk and it stopped heating suddenly. I didn't realised then and later came to know its just revolving not heating. Its fun side to know GE also manufacture inferior products. Till now I am under the impression GE transformed to world leader in quality. But now the quality is down, is it bcoz of CEO change?. Does GE lost its customer foucs?. It seems every one come to one or other day back to square. Today I lost the trust GE's products.
Thanks,
Hanu

We bought ours from best buy because I HATE walmart and everything that they "stand for". Now the problem is that everybody has that walmart mentality, and we as consumers are not able, even if we wanted to, we are not able to buy a good quality product anymore. Bring the jobs back here, and lets start making quality products again.

The outside of my just-bought (walmart)GE Microwave gets so hot you could boil water on it. It took 8 minutes to pop a small bag of popcorn. The popcorn still wasn't done but my cabinets were ready to catch fire. There's only one setting really: defrost. I'd have to burn the house down to actually cook anything inside the microwave.

Add another of the same GE microwaves to the list of failures, only this one was purchased at Best Buy (same model as other listed) so maybe this is not a Walmart issue and GE is to blame for poor products.

Our WES1450DM1BB quit working last night after five months. We were cooking Rice-a-roni and I started to smell a something like faint burning wires. Now it acts like it is working, but doesn't heat at all. Apparently this is a common problem with this model.

I bought mine refurbished at a Big Lots over a year ago and it is working great. Only thing I've had to replace is the turntable wheel/support, that was difficult to get. Otherwise, one of the best microwaves I have ever owned.

I've had mine for 2+ years, no problems so far. I think it's a nice looking microwave, too.

Well now I feel kind of lucky because we got almost a year and a half out of ours before it just turned off. Thought I blew a breaker, but unfortunately just the microwave died. It is my 2nd GE and the first one died suddenly as well. Won't be buying another GE!!

OK folks - before you go condemning GE or Walmart, check the reviews on any other brand of microwave and you will see they all have plenty of bad reviews. It's a crap shoot no matter what brand you buy or how much you pay.

Had the same problem with ours. We just got it, we haven't had it a month, and it just stopped heating, and the power button/stop button wouldn't work, and it continuously ran, we tried unpplugging it, but as soon as we plugged it back up, it was still continuously running! Never had a microwave like this before, and wouldn't recommend it to anyone! Very disappointed!!!!!

I have had the JES1351 model since 1/2001 and purchased it from Walmart. It is the best microwave I have ever owned. Total work horse. Today I am buying the WES model because i am changing appliances to stainless steel. Every product produces some duds and Walmart should take those back. I am hoping to have a long happy relationship with my new microwave and it looks good too....looks almost just like the JES model only stainless steel. This model runs nearly $200 less than a similar model sold at Sears

Good thing I read these posts. I have a GE WES1384SM2SS, NOT the one in question here. But I was online looking to see if it's a prevalent problem with GE microwaves, when used on high setting for about over 20 minutes, not being able to continue cooking at all if you open the door to test/stir the food. Apparently, if you're cooking a thick chunk of frozen baked ziti... or even using the PASTA BOAT, which must be on HIGH for at LEAST 22 mins. as listed, or more like 28 minutes in reality (by my testing). If you do this, the micro will go the full 30 minutes (who knows about longer than that!), but if you OPEN the micro at about 22 minutes to stir it, then close the door and press the button to continue, NOTHING happens! I found a way around it (by accident) that works "sometimes." I close the door and press the "beverage" or "popcorn" button til it kicks in, then I have another few minutes to continue with the food, and press "add another 10 seconds" button repeatedly if I need even more time. I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE GE MICROWAVES!!!! And now that I'm reading all THIS stuff, I will NEVER purchase another GE product again! I'm due for a new fridge and stove, and I'm now going to head out to Sears and get myself a couple of Kenmores.. and maybe a NEW NON-GE MICROWAVE while I'm at it!

We had this model for about 16 months. I bought it for the size. It fits the place in my cabinet made for the microwave. This morning it heated my hot tea just fine, but the next thing I put in took the time but would not heat when I pushed the START button. I bought another one for the size, and I bought the extended warranty for $15. Let's see how long this one lasts.

I have had mine for around 3 years and no issues at all. I'm very sorry to hear about others having so many bad experiences! GE should be ashamed!

This is the exact one I have and purchased from Wally World too a little over 2 years ago. It just stopped working, but the clock still works. Kind of big to wear on my wrist though. I've had 4 or 5 microwaves in the last dozen years-all different brands. They are all junk. One almost burned my house down, so I guess when they just stop working, it could be worse.

That is your magnetron and apparently GE has serious issues with these. If you don’t cover you food and get grease and food splatters all over the inside of your microwave it can cause the wavefield cover to arc and that can blow your magnetron. However, I keep a nearly spotless microwave and always cover my food and I still had this problem, so I am leaning toward the idea that GE just created a shitty product. Can you say Made in Korea anyone?
