Last weekend, I had the honor of attending the Ventura County Stand Down, organized by the National Coalition of Homeless Veterans. In war time, Stand Down allowed exhausted combat units time to rest and recover away from the battlefields, in a place of relative security and safety. Troops were able to take care of personal hygiene, get clean uniforms, enjoy warm meals, receive medical and dental care, mail and receive letters, and enjoy the camaraderie of friends. The modern day Stand Down is a grassroots, community-based intervention program designed to bring together homeless veterans in a single location, for one to three days. The brainchild of Vietnam Veterans Robert Van Keuren and Dr. Jon Nachison, the modern Stand Down provides homeless veterans with access to the community resources they need to begin addressing their individual problems so that they can start rebuilding their lives. A very special “thank you” to Cal Farmer and Claire Hope-Farmer; Claire is the glue that has held the Ventura County Stand Down together since 1993. The Odds Are In Your Favor

Iraq Star Chopper

Time is Running Out for your chance to win this one of a kind motorcycle. Since a maximum of 1,000 tickets will be sold, the odds of winning are very good. Valued at over $100,000, the proceeds from the auction of the custom Iraq Star Chopper will benefit our wounded warriors through the Iraq Star Foundation. But time is running out…the winner will be announced on 9/11 at the Reagan Presidential Library during the Simi Valley Freedom Walk. If you’re in Southern California, you can see the motorcycle on display at the Library. To get your ticket, click here
Virginia National Association for Uniformed Services

In an effort to help our wounded warriors make it through each day emotionally, the NOVA chapter of NAUS (the National Association for Uniformed Services) has instituted a program to take some of our nation’s heroes out for unique field trips. In June, a group of Wounded Warriors from Dewitt Army Community Hospital were escorted on a private tour of the United States Supreme Court in Washington, DC by LTC (Ret) Steven Chucala, Esq., the Vice President of the Virginia Chapter of NAUS. We want to commend them for their good works, and hope that their “out of the box” planning inspires others throughout the country to do the same. The NAUS is a non-profit organization that promotes the legislative interests of the military community before Congress and state governments.

Attention All Veterans!

There are a large number of websites that provide information on Veterans benefits and how to file and/or ask for them. Accordingly, there are many sites that explain how to obtain books, military/medical records, information and how to appeal a denied claim with the VA. Most of this information is free and available to all veterans, but you have to ask for it. We invite you to look over the list of websites in the event that one or more of them will be advantageous to you. We also recommend that you bookmark the page for future use.

The Freedom Walk is proud to once again join forces with the Ronald Reagan Library to remember the victims of September 11th and honor our troops and first responders at the Annual 9/11 Freedom Walk. The Freedom Walk is a positive way for Americans with different opinions to come together and remember that we are "the greatest nation in the world". We live in a nation where we are able to think and state our different points of view. Let's remember those who sacrifice to preserve the freedoms we hold dear.

Indie Film

Not the Usual Military Story

"Homecoming" shows a rare glimpse of a female soldiers story - a view one seldom finds in cinema. Writer/director Sean Hackett focuses on what today's military sacrifice - their 20s. By turns hilarious and heartbreaking, this authentic and acute portrait shows Estelle, home on leave, trying to reconnect with her loved ones, all the while redefining "home. "Homecoming" is a story about family, friendship, and love. For more information, click here

Important Lifeline

Suicude Prevention Hotline

As more and more men and women in uniform return from Iraq and Afghanistan, there is an increasing need for mental health care. The VA is reaching out to Veterans in crisis and their families to raise awareness about suicide prevention resources, such as the Veterans Crisis Line at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). The PSA encourages Veterans in crisis to call the crisis hotline number at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) to reach a trained VA mental health professional, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. An online Veterans Chat program, which provides the ability to communicate anonymously online in real-time with a trained VA mental health professional, can be accessed through the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s web page
